Glossary
Access
Microsoft®'s database software, available in some versions of Microsoft® Office
ASP
("Active Server Pages") server-side scripting technology developed by Microsoft®
Browser
software that fetches and displays a website from the Internet. Examples are Microsoft®'s Internet Explorer and Netscape® Navigator.
Cookie
a file that some web pages place on a visitor's computer. Most cookies are harmless, like those for deterring ballot stuffing in my surveys. Those most likely to invade your privacy are third party cookies, typically from market research groups.
Crawler
(or "spider", "bot", "indexing") software used by search engines to locate web addresses on the Internet. Crawlers accomplish this by scrutinizing known web pages for hyperlinks to new web sites.
CSS
("Cascading Style Sheets") an HTML enhancement that makes it easier to control and deliver content appealing to spiders as well as surfers
Database
fast, reliable repository for related data. Examples are Access and MySQL.
Domain Name
(or "web site address", "URL") is specified in the "address" field of a browser window when requesting a website. I can help you select and register a domain name. In any case, be sure to use an Internic-approved domain registrar.
Dynamic Web Effect
the ability of a web page to change appearance as a result of a visitor's action.
e-Commerce
Web-based retail operations.
Hosting
Server operation requires too many resources for most firms, who rely instead on "hosting service providers". Host providers operate servers that keep websites available 24-7. Each month, HostIndex ranks the top 25 host providers.
HTML
("Hypertext Markup Language") the most popular coding protocol for creating web pages. It's easy to learn and use for simple tasks like minor maintenance. I can train you or your staff.
Hyperlink
(or "link") an area on a web page that will, at the click of a mouse, lead to another web page. Textual links are normally underlined.
Illustrator
Adobe's graphic design software that uses vector technology. I created my logo using Illustrator.
JavaScript
a programming language used mainly for adding logic and dynamic capabilities to HTML code. I used JavaScript to produce the rollover effects for the hyperlinks in this web site.
Keyword
a word or brief phrase given a directory or search engine in order to retrieve links to related web sites. Because search engines create their indexes based on the occurrences of such phrases, proper keyword selection and placement is vital to SEO.
MySQL
a database developed by the open source community.
Open Source
software created by and for the public through specific distribution criteria, as shown in The Open Source Definition
Photoshop
Adobe's software for editing photos and supplying graphic effects. I made the hyperlink buttons on this site using Photoshop.
PHP
("Hypertext Preprocessor") open source server-side scripting technology.
Search Engine
a website that responds to visitors' requests for web page listings. Search engines build their listings using a crawler, frequently supplementing them with sponsored links and the contents of directories developed by human editors.
SEO
techniques for attracting preferred visitors to a web site through major search engines. Current SEO is more about easily decipherable code and copy and about links from high-ranking, relevant web sites than it is about "search engine submission".
SERP
("Search Engine Response Page") the web page a search engine returns in response to a visitor's keyword entry.
Server
a computer that stores and delivers websites. Most servers also comply with or act as a gateway for requests to process data. See also "hosting".
Server-Side Scripting
technology that processes web page data on a server. Examples are shopping carts and surveys.
Spider
see "Crawler"
SSL
("Secure Socket Layer") an encryption protocol valued for transferring sensitive form data like credit card numbers. The web address on an encrypted page is prefixed by "https:" instead of "http:".
Subdomain
A web address subordinate to the main URL but more distinctive than an internal link. This page would be a subdomain if its address were http://glossary.carolynfriedberg.com instead of http://www.carolynfriedberg.com/glossary.htm. Subdomains cost more, but search engines are more apt to index them.
Traffic Reports
reflect website visitor frequency, errors, referring URL's and keywords
Turnkey Solution
requires the minimal amount of user involvement. For websites, this means the web designer arranges for and manages hosting and domain name registration.
URL
see "domain name"
